Wicked Storm granted a patent for its learner profiling method

EdTech company Wicked Storm (CEO Jeongjun Lee) announced on February 20 that it was granted a patent (No. 10-2767110) on February 7 for an “LLM (Large Language Model)-based learner profiling method to analyze learner tendencies.” The invention was filed on August 20, 2024, and was granted after examination by the Korean Intellectual Property Office. The patent holder is Wicked Storm Inc.

The patent covers a method that uses a large language model (LLM) to analyze learner tendencies based on data generated by learning activities, and to classify and predict learners’ characteristics and states. Rather than stopping at outcomes such as scores or assessment results, it focuses on reading learner tendencies from learning process data.

The data behind the analysis is learning data collected with the global xAPI standard. Wicked Storm’s learning data repository Lecognizer is a solution that collects and stores learning activities using the xAPI standard, and it earned GS Grade 1 Certification (KTL-GS-24-0035) in 2024. Wicked Storm is applying this patented technology to Lecognizer’s analytics pipeline to build the basis for personalized diagnosis and item recommendations.

Profiling results are not meant to judge learners on anyone’s behalf. AI analyzes learning data and summarizes learners’ tendencies and states, and administrators and instructors refer to this to decide on and apply the support learners need.

In June 2024, Wicked Storm received KOLAS AI model certification (2024-122-VSW-K) for the Learning Analytics Diagnosis and Recommendation Model v1.0, and it has carried out KERIS’s ‘Toc Toc! Math Expedition’, an AI-based elementary math class support system. On August 20, 2024, alongside this patent, it also filed a patent for a “learning anomaly detection system based on xAPI learning behavior data,” broadening the foundation of its AI technology for learner analysis.
